Work Series sponsored by The Filipino Community Center, Inc. and Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai’i.
The goal of this Financial Literacy Program is to help the Community improve their understanding of financial concepts and services to empower individuals and small business owners in making informed choices and actions to improve the financial well-being for their families, businesses, and communities. The following series of financial workshops will provide a diverse understanding of the financial challenges we are facing.
Starting July 29, 2020 to May 19, 2021
There will be Nine (9) sessions, two hours each, to be held once a month on a Wednesday evening at the FilCom Center. No cost to the attendees.
This series will provide the following information for the attendees:
1) SBA, USDA, Hawaii SBDC, SBRRF, DBEDT (Buy Local Campaign): Support for the small businesses who are seeking financial assistance by providing resources through SBA, USDA, Hawaii SBDC, City and County of Honolulu – SBRRF, and DBEDT (Buy Local). Discussion on the various programs that are available and the application and submittal process. Also information on the Buy Local Campaign (State of Hawaii – DBEDT).

2) Bill 7 (Bill 60): Bill 7 was enacted into Law at the end of May, 2019 to encourage construction of affordable rental housing on certain eligible parcels. To help address the Affordable Rental Housing shortage, Bill 7 will encourage the construction of at least 500 new affordable rental units per year until the Bill sunsets in 2024. Who will benefit from this Bill? A) Property owners – a new viable option for developing their small lot property or to sell to developers looking to capitalize on these new incentives; B) Developers – lowered costs to develop an income generating asset. C) Renters – more affordable housing options on the market in area close to school and work. D) Surrounding Neighborhoods – economic boost as more residents mean more foot traffic to surrounding businesses. Bill 7 (affordable rental housing) will be permitted in the following zones on Oahu: Apartment, apartment mixed-use, and business mixed-use zones EXCEPT in transit-oriented development special districts.

3) Expo/Trade Show: Manila Fame October 15 to 17, 2020 and MabuHI Pacific Summit and Expo May 1 and 2, 2021. Trade Shows that intends to expand the economic partnership between the State of Hawaii and the Philippines Sister State and Cities, provide an overview of economic conditions in both countries, and promote economic activity by establishing business networks as a result of the Trade Show. Discussion on MabuHI Pacific Summit and Expo; benefits to various stakeholders including the City and County of Honolulu, the State of Hawaii, the Filipino Chamber of Commerce, the Filipino Community in Hawaii, and the Philippines

5) Consumer and Business Products: Gain a better understanding of the various banking products to accommodate the needs of your daily life and business operations. This session will cover consumer and business products offered by financial institutions (deposit, savings, loans, credit cards and other services).

6) Medicaid/Medicare: Obtain a better understanding of the complex and confusing issues related to the health care industry and financing your personal health insurance programs. This session will cover Medicaid and Medicare Programs, Social Security and Long-Term Care.

9) Small Business: Position your small business for success by uncovering the various pitfalls, challenges, and potential solutions for your company’s success. This is a panel session that will cover topics important for small businesses: 1) Product Selection/Pricing, 2) Marketing and Social Media, 3) Leadership and Motivating others for Success.

10) Guidance to Protect You and Your Employee from COVID-19 Exposure: Overview latest federal/state governments and professional safety organizations guidelines to protect you and your employees from COVID-19 exposure. Discussion to include 1) Exposure risk assessments for you and your employees; 2) Changes in processes, procedures, and work habits; 3) Personal protective equipment; 4) Installation of barriers and other engineering controls to reduce employee exposure and 5) Worker training programs.
